Environment centre calls for more transparency after three months of complaints.

New South Wales Public Interest Advocacy Centre has taken another crack at a contentious project aimed at reducing pollution at its controversial Nauru detention centre, calling for the government to reveal its plan to fix the centre's broken water treatment system.

Nauru has been the focus of a public interest lobbying campaign since the launch of a website that detailed its infrastructure needs, but those complaints have been kept secret, despite concerns about the risks to the island's residents and to international law.

The Guardian last week reported that PNG's environment ministry had identified about 1,000 leaks, almost all of which had already been fixed, in the centre's water treatment system, though Nauru's environmental minister has insisted that more work is needed.

The public interest advocacy centre's appeal has come after a three month long internal inquiry into Nauru's water treatment system concluded that the centre needed to be fixed, but many residents fear that is not being done.

The pipac committee released a report on Tuesday which called for a better accounting of the facility's waste treatment and storage, the construction of water lines and infrastructure to remove the waste generated from its sewage treatment and storage.

The report also detailed concerns among some residents that the facility's drinking water treatment was flawed.

The pipac committee said: "In the light of the fact that at the time of the report in 2013, the pipac review did not acknowledge and were not able to comment on the reported health impacts of the operation.

They are of considerable public and political importance in light of these issues.

They are, therefore, critical in our view to the work of the committee.".

Nauru and PNG's environment minister, Graham Perrett, told Guardian Australia that the department had already begun the work needed to resolve the issues the panel raised.

Perrett said: "The pipac review of Nauru in had recommended the improvement of the water system in that part of the facility but not the overall infrastructure.

The committee's findings that we will now work towards fixing the water system and improving the quality of water in the whole facility is very welcome news for our residents in the Nauru detention centre and for those residents.

The committee also recommended that the government urgently implemen.

This month, the Ontario Municipal Board will start considering a request from Ontario Municipal Board chief clerk Mary-Sue Johnson to examine whether to buy up to 14 million worth of vacant land in Niagara region for a community centre.

The plan, which would allow the local board to spend that money in a manner that is designed to help revitalize the area, is a joint effort between Johnson and business and community leaders with a mandate.

The idea is to create a permanent community centre to help people from around the area gain access to affordable rental housing and schools and businesses.

"We really are trying to revitalize the area and the Niagara region through economic development said Jeff Anderson, a developer with the property owners' association who supports the plan.
